Meditation Retreats in Bodh Gaya, India.![]()
Bodh Gaya is the place where the Buddha awakened, sitting under a tree. The Bodh Gaya retreats have been running at the Thai Monastery there since 1975, first started by Christopher Titmuss. Currently, Martin Aylward teaches the first retreat, 17-27 January, with an invited co-teacher, and Christopher and Radha Nicholson teach the second. Dates and Booking
Bodh Gaya is the centre of the Buddhist world. There are monasteries there from every Buddhist tradition. The grounds around the main temple and the Bodhi tree where Buddha sat are filled with Maroon-robed Tibetan monks practicing prostrations and rice offerings. The smell of incense and butter lamps fills the air. Buddhist pilgrims from all over Asia, and increasingly the whole world, make their circumnambulation around the ancient stupa. Our retreat is held in the stunningly beautiful Thai Monastery, just a few minutes walk from the site of Buddha’s Awakening. It is a very special environment for Dharma practice. There is a strong sense of lineage. One senses the solidarity with countless other women and men who have contemplated life deeply to know its Freedom of Being. Some return again and again to Bodh Gaya for these annual retreats, and it has become an important moment in the calendar of many Dharma friends.
